They are getting ready for Winterfest in Ely.
There is no snow.
They are advertising for people to collect clean snow in bags and pick up trucks to haul to Whiteside Park.
Apparently, there will be really tiny snow sculptures this year. We used call them "snowballs" and throw them at each other.
A bunch of folks here at Red Rock suggested that they skip snow sculptures and make ice sculptures. We always have ice and ice sculptures are more spectacular than snow sculptures.
Or how about ice fishing? It's immensely more fun than wandering around the park looking at snowmen and some of the more creepy looking stuff they sculpted last year. Just a slightly biased idea. Note: the Curmudgeon never wandered around the park. He just spied some of the more abstract offerings as he drove by on occasion.
Then there's always popsicle stick crafts in the community center basement or weaving bits of yarn into keychains and bookmarks.
This season's Winterfest is going to be much less festive with the lack of creativity by those in charge. It will be just a lot of transplants padding around in mukluks and tunics saying "oooh & aahhh" at one, desolate, three foot diameter snowball.
It doesn't take much to get 'em going, though.
Remember to collect your garbage bags of clean snow tonight and head out to the park. It'll be an event just like gathering around a community compost pile.
The Curmudgeon needs to grow a scruffy beard and wear mukluks to fit in.
